奥克兰大学校园位置良好，距离底特律的韦恩郡国际机场只有一个小时左右的车程。校园面积巨大，还拥有两个全美国知名的高尔夫球场。学校的体育队伍参加NCAA第一级别的赛事，征战在地平线联盟的联赛，参与项目包括棒球、篮球、网球、排球、足球、越野、高尔夫、田径、游泳等。这些队伍一共获得27次赛季联赛冠军以及56次季后赛或杯赛的冠军，还入围NCAA全国巡回赛44次。

奥克兰大学的校训为意大利语，翻译成中文是“追寻美德和知识”。学校的昵称最初为“先驱者”，后来改为“金灰熊”。校歌fight song为“OU Fight”，旗帜代表色为黑色和金色。
